Every child deserves a jumper that feels like it was made just for them. Because with this free baby jumper knitting pattern with motif options, it can be. The Blank Canvas Baby Sweater is a simple, beautifully shaped DK baby jumper worked flat in pieces, designed from the very beginning to take any motif you choose. Knit it plain in a colour they love, add stripes to the sleeves, or pick a character from the growing Blank Canvas Motif Library and make something genuinely one of a kind.

What Is the Blank Canvas Baby Sweater?

The Blank Canvas Baby Sweater is a clean, classic DK jumper for babies and young children, sized from 0-6 months through to 4-5 years. It has a neat ribbed hem, cuffs, and neckband, a simple drop-shoulder construction, and sleeves that work beautifully plain or striped in two contrasting colours.

The genius of it, if I may say so myself, is what goes on the front. Or rather, what does not go on the front until you decide. The body is worked in stocking stitch and left deliberately blank, ready for you to add any motif from the Blank Canvas Motif Library. Each motif in the library comes with its own blog post, which includes the chart, full written row-by-row instructions for those who prefer not to work from charts, the yarn requirements for that specific motif, and the placement instructions so you know exactly where to position it on each size.

You can also knit the sweater completely plain. It is a lovely pattern in its own right, and a very satisfying knit from start to finish.

    The Blank Canvas Motif Library

The Blank Canvas Motif Library is a growing collection of free motif charts, each designed to work with the Blank Canvas Baby Sweater. Every motif has its own blog post with everything you need, including the chart, written instructions, yarn quantities, and placement notes for each size.

The first motif is now live. Head to the Blank Canvas Motif Library to see what is available, and check back regularly as new motifs are added throughout the year.

    What You Need

    Yarn

Yarn A: Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic, 295m per 100g ball) in your chosen main colour. See the sizing table below for the number of balls required.

Stylecraft Special DK is my go-to for this pattern. It is soft, washable, comes in a huge range of colours, and knits up beautifully at this tension. Any DK yarn with a similar tension will work equally well. Check the ball band for the recommended needle size and swatch before casting on.

If you are adding a motif, the blog post for your chosen motif will give you the additional yarn requirements for the motif colours.

For yarn weight standards, the Craft Yarn Council is a useful reference.

    Needles

3.25mm straight needles and 4mm straight needles. A 3.25mm circular needle is useful for picking up the neckband stitches but straight needles will work too.

    Also Needed

    Darning needle and stitch markers.

    Tension

22 sts x 30 rows = 10cm x 10cm using 4mm needles and stocking stitch. To save time, take time to check your tension. A difference of even one stitch over 10cm will affect the finished size across the full width of the sweater.

    Sizing and Yarn Requirements

The figures below are for the plain sweater knitted in one colour. If you are adding a motif, see the relevant motif blog post for additional yarn requirements.

    Sleeves (Make Two)

The sleeves can be worked plain in Yarn A throughout, or in a two-colour stripe pattern for extra character. Each sleeve uses a different contrast colour, so one sleeve is worked in Yarn A and Yarn B, and the other in Yarn A and Yarn C. If you prefer plain sleeves, simply ignore the colour change instructions and work throughout in Yarn A.

Stripe pattern (worked over 6 rows, repeat throughout):

    Rows 1-2: Yarn A.
    Rows 3-6: Yarn B or C.

    Cast on 32 (32: 36: 36: 36: 36) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A.

Work in stocking stitch and stripe pattern as set (or plain Yarn A), inc one st at each end of 5th and every foll 4th (5th: 4th: 3rd: 3rd: 3rd) row until 49 (49: 55: 61: 61: 67) sts.

Continue without shaping until piece measures 16 (18: 26: 30: 32: 36) cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.
    Cast off.

    Neckband

    Join right shoulder seam.

With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A, pick up and knit 13 (13: 13: 18: 19: 18) sts evenly along left side of neck, pick up and knit 5 (5: 5: 5: 5: 5) sts along shaping, work across 12 (12: 14: 14: 16: 16) sts left on holder at front of neck, pick up and knit 5 (5: 5: 5: 5: 5) sts along shaping, pick up and knit 13 (13: 13: 18: 19: 19) sts evenly along right side of neck, pick up and knit 22 (22: 26: 28: 28: 28) from cast off stitches at back of neck. 70 (70: 76: 88: 92: 92) sts.

    Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to last 2 (2: 0: 0: 0: 0) sts, k2.

    Work 2×2 rib as set for 6 (6: 6: 6: 8: 10) rows in total.

Cast off using a stretchy bind off or Elizabeth Zimmermann’s sewn cast off (instructions below).

    Finishing

Join left shoulder and neckband seams. Fold each sleeve in half lengthwise and place a stitch marker at the centre point. Line this marker up with the shoulder seam, then pin the sleeve into position between the sleeve markers on the front and back. Once happy with the placement, sew into position. Join side and sleeve seams.
    Block to finish.

    Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Sewn Cast Off

This cast off is particularly useful for the neckband as it gives a stretchy, neat edge that will not pull tight over a little one’s head.

Cut a length of yarn approximately three times the length of the edge to be cast off and thread onto a tapestry needle. Holding the knitting needle with the stitches in your left hand and the tapestry needle in your right hand: *insert the tapestry needle into the first two stitches on the knitting needle as if to purl and draw the yarn all the way through. Without taking the stitches off the needle, insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch as if to knit, draw the yarn through and slip the stitch off. Repeat from * until all stitches are cast off.

    MIX IT UP
SleevesWork plain in Yarn A throughout for a classic look, or add stripes in two contrast colours for extra character. One sleeve uses Yarn B, the other uses Yarn C, so they match without being identical.
ColourA neutral main colour gives you the most flexibility for motif colours. Grey, oatmeal, white, and soft blue all work beautifully as a base.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different yarn for this free baby jumper knitting pattern with motif?

Yes. The pattern is written for Stylecraft Special DK but any DK yarn with a similar tension will work. Check the ball band for the recommended needle size and always knit a tension swatch before casting on. If your tension is slightly off, adjust your needle size until you match the stated tension of 22 sts x 30 rows over 10cm.

Do I have to add a motif?

Not at all. The Blank Canvas Baby Sweater is a perfectly lovely jumper worked plain in a single colour. The motif option is there when you want it. Many knitters make the plain version first to get familiar with the pattern, then return to it with a motif in mind for the next one.

How do I know where to place the motif on the front?

Each motif post in the Blank Canvas Motif Library includes detailed placement instructions for every size. You will find the exact row and stitch positions for each size so there is no guesswork involved.

Can I knit the sleeves in a single colour instead of stripes?

Absolutely. The stripe pattern is optional. Simply work the sleeves throughout in Yarn A and skip the colour changes. The construction is identical whether you stripe or not.

What skill level is this free baby jumper knitting pattern with motif?

Beginner to intermediate. You need to be comfortable with knitting, purling, basic shaping (increases and decreases), and picking up stitches for the neckband. If you are adding an intarsia motif, some experience with working in two colours on the same row is helpful, though the motif blog posts include full guidance to help you through it.

Will there be more motifs added to the library?

Yes. The Blank Canvas Motif Library is an ongoing project with new charts added regularly. Sign up to the newsletter below to be the first to know when a new motif is released.

    Happy knitting,

    Jane
